THE  ASPEN  SERIES

With this new Series, I offer the incredible example of the aspen tree…to gain strength, resilience and a kind of shared collective of all that is good.  Aspen trees are often described as being “like a family” because they are literally interconnected through their roots, forming one large organism rather than just a grove of individual trees.  When one trunk is damaged by fire or disease, the root system quickly spurs new growth, giving resilience to the entire stand – much like how members of a family support each other.  They are physically and genetically connected – sharing resources and supporting one another for collective endurance.
A quote from one of my favorite books, The Island of Missing Trees, by Elif Shafak says it all…..“And if you want to emerge stronger and kinder from your trials, find an aspen to learn from – a tree so tenacious it can fend off even the flames that aim to consume it.”
This collection is extremely personal to me.  While attending a wedding in Vail, CO I was literally thunderstruck by the sheer immense beauty of the surroundings.  It was held high on a hill in the middle of a forest of these gorgeous aspen trees.  I still get emotional as I think back on the day.  You see, the only person missing from that day was the mother of the bride (my dear friend) who was taken by cancer months before. However, the wedding was such a celebration of life and love and hope and gladness, and most importantly – FAMILY – that I just knew I had to document this “happening."  Hence, The Aspen Series.  I hope you enjoy my vision and experience of the “mother” of all trees…the aspen.                      ~Cathy Cooper Scott
